PS3 Beats Wii in September Sales Charts, Halo 3 ODST Tops Software

For the first time in the current generation of systems, the PS3 led sales for the month of September 2009 over its console rivals. With a new model known as the PS3 Slim and a $300 price tag, consumers purchased nearly a half million units long before the holiday season officially kicks off. The system had a comfortable 30,000 unit lead over the Wii and nearly a 150,000 lead over the Xbox 360.

1. Nintendo DS: 524,200
2. PS3: 491,800
3. Wii: 462,800
4. Xbox 360: 352,600
5. PSP: 190,400
6. PS2: 146,000

The immediate success of PS3 Slim also helped PS3 software sales as two games made it into the Top 10 for the system in September (Madden and Batman). Leading the pack, though, was Microsoft’s Master Chief-less Halo game. Halo 3: ODST sold over 1.5 million units. While the haul was easily the best for the month, it hardly compares to the $300 million first week sales of Halo 3 back in 2007. Wii Sports Resort came in at #2 for the month, continuing at a steady pace in its second full month on the market. Rounding out the top 3 is Madden NFL 10 for the Xbox 360 at nearly 300,000 units. Finally, it’s worth noting that The Beatles: Rock Band outsold Guitar Hero 5, despite the latter being a more established franchise (Rock Band is only two years old).
