PS3 Ships with Fewer than 200,000

Originally the plan was for Sony to ship 4 million PlayStation 3 units by the end of 2006. A few weeks ago that number got cut in half, dropping to just 2 million globally. It now appears that even that number is in question after CNN’s Chris Morris reported fewer than expected PlayStation 3 units shipped by Sony to retail.

“American Technology Research’s P.J. McNealy, in a note to investors, said there were just 125,000 to 175,000 PS3s in stores for the system’s launch. That’s roughly half of his initial expectations. Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets estimated the number at around 150,000.” The article goes on to say that only 750,000 PS3s will be sold before year’s end in America. In comparison, rival Nintendo expects 4 million global sales of its Wii.
