Sony has announced that PS4 passed another significant sales milestone. As of December 31, 2019, the console had sold 1.181 billion games.
The PS4 is selling games at an attachment rate of almost 10 games for every one console sold. That puts its attachment rate on par with PS2, which sold 1.53 billion games and 155 million consoles.
Last year, Sony announced that PS4 passed 100 million lifetime consoles sold. In doing so, it was able to eclipse the original PlayStation, despite seeing sales slow significantly in the final three months of 2019.
Software sales remain strong. A quarter of a billion games were sold in 2019. Blockbusters like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare posted three-day sales that topped $600 million. Modern Warfare was both the top-selling game on PlayStation Store in 2019 and the overall best-selling game of the year.
Meanwhile, the PS5 is set to launch in late 2020. So far, Sony has announced that PS5 will include an SSD, PSVR support, PS4 backward compatibility, and 8K output.
