The Resident Evil series is a long running series which goes back to the PSX days. Today the Resident Evil series is a phenomenon like none other in the “survivor horror” genre. The first Resident Evil series has finally made its way to a Nintendo system (actually RE 2 was on the N64) and comes as no surprise to me, since it was originally planned for the Nintendo 64. Since those 64 days the game has transformed into, well, a much more horrific fright fest than it would have been in those times.

It is quite obvious that next to a few games, like Metroid Prime and even its predecessor the Resident Evil remake, Resident Evil 0 is one of the best looking games on the Gamecube. Unfortunately too much time has been spent on detail and in-game movies and the more important parts of the game like controls and gameplay have been neglected. If a game isn’t fun, than I have no interest in it no matter how great it looks, sounds, or feels. Resident Evil 0 might be a very “pretty” game (well it is actually gruesomely ugly, but the graphics are splendid), but once again, little can be made up in a game if it doesn’t have an appeal to it.

Now onto the more lackluster part of the game, this is the gameplay itself. The gameplay in a game is the “core” of a game. If the gameplay sucks than really I don’t see a point in even giving a title the chance. I’ve held you off for quite sometime now, so I must tell you that this game does not suck. It is relatively good with a few shortfalls such as the story and the lack of innovation. True, the inventory system has been changed so that you may drop items if you please, but everything still looks and feels the same that it has for the past 7 or so years. You play as two characters which you can “zap” between whenever you feel like. Their names are Rebecca Chambers (a police officer) and Billy Coen (a convicted murderer).

The story is quite plain and “out of this world” I guess you could say. In 1998 several highly “unusual” murders have occurred in Raccoon City. There are reports of people eating monsters that are both terrorizing citizens and baffling the police. The only solution is to call in the city’s elite police team called S.T.A.R.S. to investigate. On their flight towards the forest in Raccoon City, their helicopter’s engine inexplicably fails and an emergency landing took place. The two main characters end up having to solve the mystery of what is causing this madness and find a way to survive the horrors that await them in the forest. Yes, it might not sound corny right now, but trust me once you get more deeply involved into the game, it gets very stupid. Regrettably, Resident Evil 0 isn’t what we have been hoping for from Capcom. What we wanted was answers to what happened before the mansion incident and we really didn’t get any.
