While there’s conflicting information, the game’s official Japanese Twitter account claims that Village sold 4.5 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the American website claims that “over 4.5 million copies shipped worldwide.”

The distinction is important since “shipped” refers to the number of physical copies shipped to retailers but not necessarily sold to consumers. We also don’t know the breakdown between physical and digital sales. We’ve reached out to Capcom for clarification.
However, it’s safe to say that the game – which launched on May 7 – is yet another successful sales story for the Japanese publisher. Lifetime sales for the Resident Evil franchise recently topped 100 million units.
