Rocket League is going free to play later this summer

Rocket League

The popular competitive vehicular soccer game Rocket League will soon be free to play.

After first launching in 2015, the game is celebrating its fifth anniversary this summer. And while it has sold over 10 million copies to date, developer Psyonix is looking to expand its reach even more. The game is already free to play for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.

According to Psyonix, the free-to-play update also includes a “fresh coat of paint” for the game’s menus. “Menus are getting an overhaul to make the experience more manageable, and major features are being improved like Tournaments and game-wide Challenges to unlock items,” the developer says.

Existing players will be able to keep their existing inventory of customization items. In addition, the company has announced the following bonuses for anyone who played prior to the launch of the free-to-play version:

  • All Rocket League-branded DLC packs released before free to play
  • “Est. 20XX” title that displays the first year you played Rocket League
  • 200+ Common items upgraded to “Legacy” quality
  • Golden Cosmos Boost
  • Dieci-Oro Wheels
  • Huntress Player Banner

Also coming later this year is an Epic Games Store version of the game. Epic purchased developer Psyonix in May 2019. The Epic Games Store version will support cross-platform play with Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
