Sea of Thieves tops 15 million players

Sea of Thieves

Rare’s action-adventure game Sea of Thieves continues to recruit new pirates at a steady rate. The company says that the game now has 15 million players.

You may recall that earlier this year, Rare announced that there were 10 million players across both PC and Xbox One. So in the seven months since then, they’ve added another 5 million players.

In addition to its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass, it was featured as part of the Xbox Free Play Days back in March. It also launched on Steam in June. So there have been plenty of opportunities for new players to join.

Here’s more from Rare (via Xbox Wire):

Last month – June 2020 – was also the biggest month so far for Sea of Thieves in terms of active players, with more than 3.3M players setting sail. A contributing factor to this growth has been our recent launch on Steam. We’ve been blown away by the support we’ve seen from the Steam community, with over 1M copies of the game having been sold so far and the game regularly appearing in the top-selling and most played games charts.

On behalf of all of us at Rare, I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who’s ever played Sea of Thieves for helping to get us this far. It’s a game that we love making, and there’s plenty more to come. See you on the seas.

My Take

The growth rate is pretty impressive for a game that launched back in 2018, although it is free for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. I’d be interested to see how many of those 15 million players are actually active users.
