Sega to release Genesis Mini for system’s 30th anniversary

Sega will be releasing a new Genesis throwback console called the Genesis Mini in time for the classic 16-bit system’s 30th anniversary in North America. It will include 40 classic titles, including Altered Beast, Gunstar Heroes, and Sonic the Hedgehog.

The Genesis Mini is based on the design of the original Sega Genesis first released in North America in 1989, although the Mini is 55% smaller. Aside from the miniature console itself, the bundle will include two regular-sized controllers (the three button variety), an HDMI cable, and a power cord.

So far, only 10 games have been announced. The rest will be unveiled at a later date. They include:

  • Altered Beast
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Comix Zone
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Shining Force
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Space Harrier II
  • ToeJam & Earl

That’s a pretty solid base of classic Genesis games, but it’s a bit pricey. Sega is going to launch the system for $80, which puts it on par with Nintendo’s Super NES Classic miniature console.

It’s worth noting that M2 is behind the Sega Genesis Mini, not AtGames, which released the regrettable Sega Genesis Flashback. M2 is behind the Sega Ages line on PS3, Xbox 360, and Switch, as well as Sega 3D Classics Collection for the 3DS.

The Sega Genesis Mini will launch on September 19, 2019. It is available for pre-order at Amazon and GameStop.
