Smash Remix adds Bowser, Wario, Ganondorf to original N64 Super Smash Bros.

Smash Remix

Modders have added Bowser and Giga Bowser to the original Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64.

The original Super Smash Bros. launched in April 1999 as a four-player fighting game with iconic Nintendo characters. The game was a blast to play with friends, but the roster was limited.

In fact, you could only play as:

  • Donkey Kong
  • Fox McCloud
  • Jigglypuff *
  • Kirby
  • Link
  • Luigi *
  • Mario
  • Ness *
  • Pikachu
  • Samus
  • Yoshi

Editor’s Note: Characters with an asterisk (*) are unlockable.

Bowser was planned for the original game but scrapped from the final release. Super Smash Bros. Melee added a ton of characters on GameCube, including Bowser and Ganondorf. Successive games added even more beloved Nintendo characters. Even characters from third-party companies joined in: Sonic the Hedgehog, Solid Snake, Pac-Man, and others.

But if you particularly liked playing the game on the Nintendo 64, all of these characters were off-limits… until modders decided to add them.

Smash Remix

Smash Remix is a fan-made project. According to N64 Today, an earlier version of the mod added seven new characters, 53 stages, and various other improvements to the game.

Aside from Bowser and Giga Bowser – who were just added – you can also play as the following characters:

  • Dark Samus
  • Dr. Mario
  • Falco
  • Ganondorf
  • Lucas
  • Wario
  • Young Link

You’ll need a legally-acquired ROM (that is to say, you own the original N64 cartridge and create the ROM yourself). In addition, you will need to download this patch from Github.
