Snails Review

Snails, in my opinion, is the best game for Palm OS. This game, by many standards, even beats out the Worms series, from which the idea came. This game is a turn-based strategy game in which each team is given a certain number of snails, who are placed on the ground, scattered around the map. Each snail has 100 health, and each weapon has its own number of uses. The point of the game is to kill all the snails on the other team. You can move your snail, and jump. You start with a few weapons, and the rest can be unlocked from playing single player missions.

One thing I found to be really great about this game is the humor. When the game is loading, or a computer snail is thinking, they spice it up by saying things like “Please wait while [snail’s name] attempts suicide or “[snail’s name] is staring at a pretty girl in the library, please wait. Or when a snail is killed, it could say things like “[snail’s name] swam like a brick of lead. Each level ending screen has a different caption, like “You must have beaten the level, otherwise you would be seeing the Game Over screen right now. Plus, just seeing those snail animations, like their smile when they kill an enemy is great.

Another awesome thing about this game is the strategy. There are tons of levels, each with unique nooks and crannies. In a game like this, you can’t assume you will be safe if you are out of their direct reach. There are air strikes, things that eat through walls, teleports, and the wind, which affects weapon projectiles.

This game really isn’t that large in memory, even with the complex engine, in-game and menu music, and voice and sound effects. The game isn’t as short as I expected it to be. There are 3 stories, one for each color snails: blue, green, and red, all with unique missions, each section unlocking a new weapon. Plus, the addition of the level editor and Zodiac button compatibility really add some extra time to the game.

Like I said, this is my favorite game for Palm OS, and it is definitely worth the purchase, as it’s only $9.99, including the level editor. This game has the best sound of any game you will find on Palm OS. It has lots of replay value and is a blast using multiplayer because you don’t even need a second device. Go buy it now.
