Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel planned for 2022

Sonic the Hedgehog movie

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is getting a sequel, and we already have a box office date.

That’s according to a report on Polygon over the weekend. They peg the release date for the film as April 8, 2022. That’s a little more than two years after the first film released this past February.

Sonic the Hedgehog debuted as the top film at the box office for Valentine’s Day weekend. For its opening weekend debut, the film grossed $70 million in the US and $100 million worldwide on a $95 million budget. The global haul has since topped $300 million.

Variety reports that Paramount Pictures is bringing back director Jeff Fowler as well as screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller. There’s no word yet on whether Ben Schwartz (Sonic), James Marsden, or Jim Carrey (Dr. Robotnik) plan to return for the sequel.

News of a follow-up is unsurprising, both given the commercial success and hints of a sequel near the end of the first film. It may just be more a matter of when they will actually be able to start filming, which is probably at least partially why it is not due until 2022.
