Sony acquires Evo, announces Evo Online 2021 dates and lineup

Sony and startup RTS announced the acquisition of the fighting game tournament Evolution Championship Series late last week. The annual esports event is better known as Evo.

“Sony Interactive Entertainment has teamed up with RTS to acquire Evo through a joint venture partnership,” SIE announced in a press release. “With expertise spanning esports event management, brand and developer consulting and gaming talent management, RTS is a new venture led by CEO Stuart Saw and backed by investors including global entertainment, sports and content company Endeavor.”

Evo co-founders Tom and Tony Cannon will remain advisors.

Evo Online

Once again, this year’s competition is online-only. Evo Online runs from August 6 to 8 and August 13 to 15. Entry is free for players in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. This year’s games include:

  • Tekken 7
  • Street Fighter V: Champion Edition
  • Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate Edition
  • Guilty Gear Strive

The online qualifiers will livestream for fans. More details are expected in the coming weeks.
