Sony acquires Insomniac Games, makers of Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank series

In a big investment, Sony announced today via Twitter that they have acquired Insomniac Games.

Insomniac is something of a legendary studio in the industry. As an independent developer for the past quarter century, they have created some of the most recognizable game series on the market, including Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance.

Most recently, Insomniac landed its biggest financial success yet with the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4. The game has sold over 13 million copies worldwide to date.

Insomniac Games already publishes most of its games on Sony platforms. The company developed the critically-acclaimed Sunset Overdrive for Xbox One, but it failed to gain much traction on Microsoft’s struggling platform.

In a statement posted on the company’s website, CEO Ted Price called the acquisition “the beginning of a new chapter in our studio’s growth and evolution.”

The decision to join forces with Sony extends far beyond familiarity. Our studio vision is to create experiences that have a positive and lasting impact on people’s lives. As we look ahead to our future, we know that joining the WWS family gives us the best opportunities to fully achieve that vision on a much larger scale. Further, we believe that Sony shares a similar vision to positively impact players’ lives, their employees’ lives and the games industry at large.

For their part, Sony gleefully announced the news on Twitter. The studio purchase will lock down even more exclusives as the company begins the transition to the upcoming PS5 console.
