Sony now owns the rights to Sunset Overdrive

Sony gained the rights to Sunset Overdrive after purchasing Insomniac Games.

That’s according to a report from PlayStation fan site Push Square. The developer behind hits like Marvel’s Spider-Man and the Ratchet & Clank series generally already released their titles exclusively on PlayStation platforms.

That exclusive relationship changed with the release of Sunset Overdrive, which was released exclusively on Xbox One and then ported to PC. The game was a commercial flop but received fairly positive reviews.

Does this mean that Sunset Overdrive is about to get a PS4 release? Given the poor sales, I wouldn’t count on it. Furthermore, it’s not clear if Microsoft signed exclusivity rights to publish the game while Insomniac retained rights to the brand.

In other words, Sony may now have the right to publish sequels and do what it wants with the franchise in terms of merchandising and any possible movie spinoffs, but it might not have the right to release the first game on their platforms. We’ve reached out to Sony for clarification. If they respond, we’ll update this story.
