Sony’s PlayStation State of Play needed more new AAA game announcements

If you missed yesterday’s PlayStation State of Play event, you didn’t actually miss all that much.

The headliner was without a doubt The Last Of Us Part II, which will be released in February 2020. Part 2‘s release date and special editions weren’t the only announcements, but they served as the main entree if you will.

Sony confirmed that Civilization VI is coming to PS4 along with the Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm expansions. Unfortunately, the expansions are sold separately. Civilization VI was previously released on PC and Nintendo Switch. It’s also coming to Xbox One on the same day as PS4.

More interesting is news that the next game from Keita Takahashi will be released in December. Takahashi is the creator of Katamari Damacy. His new game, Wattam, definitely looks interesting, drawing inspiration from Katamari. However, the game isn’t a PS4 exclusive. It’s also coming to PC.

Also announced is that a demo of the upcoming MediEvil remake is out now. While you’re downloading the demo, you can watch 12 minutes of the MediEvil remake gameplay running on PS4 from Tokyo Game Show.

Arise: A Simple Story looks like a neat and visually impressive new adventure game coming to the PS4. It’s safe to say that people aren’t going to rush to buy a PS4 to play it, but it looks like a welcome addition to the system’s library.

PlayStation VR was shown some love during the presentation. Again, there wasn’t anything here that will move hardware. For instance, Sony announced that L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files is now available. They also showed a highlight reel of upcoming PSVR games, including Space Channel 5.

The most promising of the VR games was arguably After the Fall, a first-person shooter set in an alternate-reality ’80s-era post-apocalyptic Los Angeles where the city is frozen over. This might be one to add to your watch list.

Last but not least, the company revealed its October PlayStation Plus lineup: The Last of Us Remastered and MLB The Show 19. Good news for baseball fans, right?

Overall, it wasn’t a groundbreaking event. Sony probably figured that announcing the release date for The Last of Us Part 2 was enough in itself.

As someone who consistently plays PS4, the announcements were a tad disappointing. It would have been nice to see some bigger-name titles.

That being said, it may just be a sign that the company is holding back for PS5. Still, to be sure, there are some games still coming to PS4 worth considering before the next generation starts. It also gives us time to catch up on our backlogs!

  1. It really didn’t. Sony has the gen wrapped with many incredible games still coming up. It’s too early to show their next gen efforts, so you’ll have to wait a few more month (after XMas) until you hear from more new AAA announcements for next gen.
