Steam Hacked Possibly Compromising Personal Info

Valve’s popular PC game distrubition service Steam was the target of hackers, the company said in an e-mail on Thursday. The company’s forums were defaced on Sunday and after an investigation, they found that the hackers had gone beyond just that. The hackers had obtained access to the Steam database, which includes “user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information.”

Before you get too worked up, the company says that they “do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked.” They do suggest to watch your credit card closely and change your account password, especially if it is the same as a Steam forum account password.
