The Super Mario Bros. franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Super Mario Maker for Wii U will for the first time give fans the chance to create their own creative retro-inspired stages when the game launches tomorrow. So it seems like a good chance for Mario series creator Shigeru Miyamoto to respond to long-standing fan rumors.

One of the more intriguing theories is that Super Mario Bros. 3 did not actually happen. According to the Internet rumor, it was all just an elaborate stage play.

The theory makes a lot of sense when you think about it. The opening scene shows a curtain rise above a stage with the actors appearing on screen. Throughout the levels you will notice a number of platforms that look like they are either bolted into a wall or hanging from a ceiling. And then at the end of the level you reach a weird all-black divider that can be interpreted as the exit from stage right.

The coolest thing is that Miyamoto now says that this fan theory is actually true. Oh, and Miyamoto also reveals the mother of Bowser Jr. Find out in the video above!
