Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is one of the best launch titles on the PS Vita. You couldn’t tell from the title – it sounds like a bad children’s book – but if you give the game a chance you will find it to be a refreshing platform/puzzle game. The best part? It’s only $8!

Mutant Blobs Attack is an inane mix of Katamari Damacy and LocoRoco. You roll around stages as a mutant blob trying to increase your size by absorbing random stuff into your gelatinous body. There’s a catch: only objects smaller than you can be absorbed, which in turn makes you larger. This means that you have to collect balls, cans and eventually people in order to grow.

The blob can only do a few things – namely jump, but he can also fly at certain points in the game – so you have to rely on his dexterity. He can easily squeeze through tight crevices and pipes, as well as jump surprisingly high. If you get a good speed going you can leap across gaps or reach areas you wouldn’t expect by wall jumping. Magnetized rails can repel the blob with R or attract him with L, giving you an additional way to maneuver through the levels.

The developers integrated some of the best features of the Vita, including the gyroscope for levels where you can tilt the screen to move through a maze. The touch-screen is used to push and pull platforms that can be used to block lasers, transport the blob, and even catapult him over great distances. The game is as much about puzzle solving as it is platformer. The levels are created in a way that your character will have to adapt to the environment and use things such as moveable platforms to his advantage.

Mutant Blobs Attack is simple yet full of character. The graphics display this best with the colorful art style, complementing the game’s light-hearted approach. The game’s graphics are both crisp and smooth. You can’t ask for more. I’m less enthusiastic about the sound – you could easily just turn it off without noticing – but it doesn’t detract from the experience either.

If you are looking for a light-hearted game that is sure to please gamers of all ages, Mutant Blobs Attack is just for you. They take some of the best elements from platformers and puzzles games, mesh them together with fan favorite Katamari Damacy, and out comes a product that is an early must-have for PlayStation Vita owners. It is definitely worth every dollar spent!
