Tekken 7 has sold 9 million copies

Tekken 7 was a major hit for an already popular fighting series.

It’s no surprise to hear that Tekken 7 is a commercial hit. What is more surprising is that the game has achieved eye-popping sales since its release in 2017 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Katsuhiro Harada revealed on Twitter that Tekken 7 has sold 9 million copies worldwide. The franchise has sold over 53 million copies since its debut on PlayStation in 1995. Harada works at Bandai Namco as the game’s director.

The Tekken franchise has been a favorite of fighting fans – particularly PlayStation gamers, although its roots began in Japanese arcades. In fact, the original game proved so popular that Tekken 2 was released just a year later. The series lost its PlayStation console exclusivity with the release of Tekken 6 on both PS3 and Xbox 360.

In addition to its commercial and critical success, the Tekken games are also a favorite in competitive gaming. Several of the Tekken games were featured over the years at the popular fighting esports event Evolution Championship Series (also known as Evo).

The news is sure to stir speculation about Tekken 8 as we’re now five years from the last console entry in the franchise. Who knows? Maybe we’ll even get details soon.
