The classic video game company Microprose is back

Microprose

After many years, Microprose is finally back (or at least the label is).

The new Microprose announced that it is publishing three upcoming games: Sea Power, Second Front, and Task Force Admiral. All three games are coming to PC via Steam.

The first of the trio, Sea Power, lets players take control of NATO and Warsaw Pact forces in a modern naval conflict. Triassic Games is the development studio behind the game.

Second Front comes from developer Hexdraw. Microprose describes it as “a tactical WWII game that genre enthusiasts always wanted and never really got.” It will feature a 3D engine, an “easy-to-use user interface,” and a “powerful” level editor to create scenarios and campaigns.

Meanwhile, Task Force Admiral is coming from developer Drydock Dreams Games. The single-player experience centers around the command of an early Pacific War US Navy carrier task force.

A proud legacy

Microprose first opened its doors back in 1982. Industry veterans Bill Stealey and Sid Meier are the founders. Microprose’s most notable games include Civilization, Civilization II, Master of Orion, Pirates!, and Railroad Tycoon.

Of course, the company is best known for its strategy and simulation titles. Sid Meier left to form Fireaxis Games in 1996. Hasbro bought Microprose in 1998, although a few years later its assets were offloaded to Infogrames. The remaining studios closed in 2002.

The latest iteration of Microprose is based in Australia. Also, it’s pretty cool to hear that one of the original co-founders, Bill Stealey, is involved with the new company.
