Nintendo’s success goes way beyond the video game industry now. As is well known, this year finally saw the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, an animated version of Nintendo’s popular franchise.

Despite some of the criticism received by fans of the game – and let’s be real, fans love to complain – the movie has been a massive success. We are talking about total box office revenue of $1.349 billion.

Thanks to this, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now the highest-grossing original film based on a video game, beating out Sonic the Hedgehog. Plus, it’s the second-highest for any animated film!

That’s right. The Super Mario Bros. Movie managed to surpass several major Disney productions. That is why Illumination and Nintendo are already preparing a sequel, although this has not yet been officially confirmed. However, rumors are running through the streets of Hollywood.

The new box office figures were revealed in Nintendo’s quarterly financial statement in which the company also confirmed that Switch sales passed 129 million units. The new title The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold 18.51 million units during the first quarter.
