US Game Sales Fall 29% in July as Wii Sports Resort Tops Charts

Another bad month for the video game industry as sales dipped 29 percent from July 2008 to July 2009. Total hardware, software and accessory sales amounted to $848.90 million for July. Sales of hardware were particularly hard hit, down 37 percent from 2008 levels. It seems not even the Wii can avoid the recession’s grasp as Nintendo only shifted 252k for the month. Despite Nintendo’s indications otherwise, perhaps a price cut is needed to stimulate hardware sales.

1. Nintendo DS – 538,900
2. Wii – 252,500
3. Xbox 360 – 202,900
4. PSP – 122,800
5. PS3 – 121,800
6. PS2 – 108,000
