Wii and Nintendo DS Top December 2007 Charts

It took the NPD forever to collect and saw through all of the data, but December 2007’s hardware and software sales have finally arrived. After a long and tumultuous holiday season, the Wii escaped a winner on the console side, despite widespread shortages. Nintendo DS was the winner on the hardware side, as well as cumulative hardware sales. The industry as a whole saw an overall boost of 28 percent in game sales over December 2006, while hardware sales (handheld and console combined) were up a full 17 percent. Again, Nintendo was on the winning end of both. Here is the hardware breakdown for the month of December 2007:

1. Nintendo DS: 2.47 million
2. Wii: 1.35 million
3. Xbox 360: 1.26 million
4. PlayStation 2: 1.1 million
5. PlayStation Portable: 1.06 million
6. PlayStation 3: 797,600

Comparing this data to 2006, Xbox 360 improved slightly (up roughly 126,000 from December 06), Wii more than doubled its December 06 sales of 604,000, and PS3 nearly doubled its December 06 haul of 490,000. Nintendo DS, meanwhile, improved from 1.6 million and PSP from 953,000. The PS2 is the only system, other than GBA, with a decline in sales year-over-year. PS2’s December 2007 total of 1.1 million is 300,000 lower than December 2006.

On the software side, Call of Duty 4 was a marginal victor over Super Mario Galaxy, besting it by a mere 70,000 units out of a combined nearly 3 million purchases. Guitar Hero III for PS2 followed closely behind them, as did Wii Play, all selling over a million units. Assassin’s Creed rounds out the top 5 a distant fifth with 893k units. Interestingly, August 2007’s Madden 08 made a triumphant return to the charts, coming in at 8th place.
