Wii Sells Nearly 1 Million for October, Fable 2 Tops Software

The start of the fourth quarter is traditionally the strongest for sales in the video game industry. So far, so good. Despite the bad economic conditions throughout the United States, the video game industry is full speed ahead. Hardware revenue is up 5 percent from October 2007. One console even came close to selling a million units long before Christmas even arrives. Wii sold double the Xbox 360 and the 360 sold nearly double the PS3.

1. Wii – 803,000
2. Nintendo DS – 491,000
3. Xbox 360 – 371,000
4. PSP – 193,000
5. PS3 – 190,000
6. PS2 – 136,000

On the software side, Fable 2 was the clear favorite of consumers, pulling in sales of approximately 800,000 units. Wii Fit came in second with nearly 500,000, while Fallout 3 (Xbox 360) came in third at 375,000 (considerably lower than the 4.7 million they shipped to retailers). Fallout 3 for PS3 was not on the charts. Also noticeably absent were Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2. While Guitar Hero: World Tour had combined unit sales of 534,000, the highest it sold on any single platform was 191,000 for Xbox 360. Rock Band 2 sold 119,000 on Xbox 360 and 118,000 on PS3 – again, not qualifying for the Top 10.
