World of Warcraft Subscriptions Stabilize

After several quarters of declining World of Warcraft subscriptions, Activision announced Wednesday that the industry’s biggest MMORPG has stabilized its user base. The franchise had 10.2 million active subscribers in the most recent quarter, which is unchanged from the previous quarter. Activision relies heavily on World of Warcraft subscriptions for a steady stream of revenue. Shares of the company were up on Wednesday.

The seven year-old MMORPG has successfully fought back Electronic Arts’ attempt at stealing subscribers to its competing Star Wars: The Old Republic, which launched in December 2011. We reported on Monday that Star Wars: The Old Republic lost 24 percent of its subscribers in one month. As a result, EA’s stock has fallen nearly $2 since Friday to $14.12.
