Facebook buys cloud gaming company PlayGiga

You probably haven’t heard of them, but the Spanish cloud gaming company PlayGiga was just acquired in a $78 million deal with Facebook.

Up until now, PlayGiga had focused its cloud gaming services on a limited number of markets: Italy, Argentina, Chile, and Spain with plans for a launch in the Middle East. According to the company’s website, they had partnerships with 60 publishers and over 300 games.

Now under the umbrella of Facebook, though, their focus will shift.

“We are excited to announce that the PlayGiga team is moving on to something new,” the company says in a statement on their website. “We are continuing our work in cloud gaming, now with a new mission. We want to thank all of our partners and customers for their support over the years.”

Facebook has been pushing into gaming to varying degrees. The acquisition of Oculus – the VR headset maker – was completed in 2014. More recently, the company introduced Facebook Gaming as a rival to Twitch and YouTube, allowing streamers to share their content on the platform.
