Crystal Dynamics to continue work on Perfect Dark after Embracer Group acquisition

The Initiative confirms that Crystal Dynamics will continue to work on the next Perfect Dark.

Earlier today, we reported that Embracer Group is buying Crystal Dynamics. It’s a deal worth $300 million that includes IP like Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and Thief. However, the deal left open the question of Crystal Dynamics’ involvement with the upcoming Perfect Dark game.

The Initiative said on Twitter that Crystal Dynamics will remain a co-development partner on the project:

We’re excited to see Crystal Dynamics take these next steps with their studio. Our teams have made great progress in building Perfect Dark together as co-development partners, and we will be continuing this work with them in their next chapter.

The original Perfect Dark is now over twenty years old. Although it was included in Microsoft’s deal with Nintendo to buy Rare in 2002, Microsoft only released one new game in the franchise: Perfect Dark Zero for Xbox 360. Rare later ported both games to Rare Replay on Xbox One, but the shooter franchise has remained largely dormant to the chagrin of fans.

The reboot was first announced at The Game Awards in 2020. It is under development at Crystal Dynamics and The Initiative, which is a first-party studio within Xbox Game Studios.
