Facebook buys Ready at Dawn, the studio behind The Order: 1886

The Order: 1886

Facebook has acquired Ready at Dawn, the studio behind The Order: 1886 and Lone Echo.

“As part of the Oculus Studios team, Ready At Dawn will continue creating memorable, immersive, and innovative VR content for gamers around the world as an independently-operated studio,” Facebook’s Mike Verdu said in a press release.

This is Facebook’s latest move into the gaming space. The company already owns Oculus. And earlier today, Microsoft announced that it was closing Mixer and transitioning the platform’s users onto Facebook Gaming.

As for Ready at Dawn, it is currently working on a sequel, Lone Echo II. That game was due to launch this year, but the pandemic has delayed its release. It is now expected to launch later this year on Oculus Rift.

The Order: 1886 is one of the more unique new franchises on PS4. The monster-hunting action game drew mixed reviews, but it was notable for demonstrating the technical prowess of the console. And for what it’s worth, I thought it was a fun game.

My Take

It’s probably safe to say that a PS5 sequel is not going to be near the top of the studio’s priorities, given the studio’s new focus on VR and the fact that PlayStation VR is a competitor to Oculus Rift. But who knows?
