Indie dev hopes to crowdfund Sega Genesis action-platformer Phantom Gear

Indie developer Mega Cat Studio is creating an action-platformer for the Sega Genesis that they hope to get funded through a campaign on crowdfunding site Kickstarter.

Phantom Gear, as it’s called, takes inspiration from 8 and 16-bit classics like Mega Man X, Gunstar Heroes, and Castlevania. The game features skill progression, multiple weapons, “massive” boss fights, and animated cutscenes that are sure to make you feel like you were transported to 1992.

The developer’s plans are to finish the game and release a boxed physical edition with the proceeds from the crowdfunding campaign. They’re trying to raise $25,000 on Kickstarter. As of the time of publication, they’re currently just short of $18,000 with three weeks to go.

If you want to support the project, $15 gets you a digital ROM. A standalone physical cartridge requires a $50 pledge. A cart, box, and manual will set you back $70. Mega Cat Studios says that the game “will be delivered in a multi-region cartridge compatible with any Sega Genesis / Mega Drive (PAL, NTSC, and NTSC-J) console versions I, II, and III.”

While we’re somewhat skeptical of Kickstarter, we do like to support indie developers here. Plus, it’s cool to hear about a Sega Genesis game coming out in 2019. Click here to visit their Kickstarter page for more information about the project.
