Let’s Play GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Series X: Dam Level

Today is the day! For the first time ever, GoldenEye 007 is on a console other than the Nintendo 64. The port just launched on Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S. Best of all, you can play for free with Xbox Game Pass.

This is a big deal. GoldenEye launched on the N64 over 25 years ago yet, due to licensing issues, fans have been unable to play this classic first-person shooter on any other console. (Of course, PC gamers have been playing it for decades now thanks to emulation.)

Gen Zers and younger may look at this game and wonder what all of the fuss is about, but this was the shooter to play in the late 1990s. It is arguably the best shooter on a home console from the 1990s with the possible exception of Rare’s other classic N64 FPS, Perfect Dark.

In addition to introducing a generation of gamers to a 3D first-person perspective on consoles, it also popularized stealth elements and split-screen multiplayer in video games. As we have previously mentioned, the Xbox Series X version features 4K resolution, achievements, and more.

Let's Play GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Series X (Dam Level)

To celebrate the launch of GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch, I am going to play the entire game over the next month. At the moment, I am playing on 00 Agent difficulty, although I may switch to a different difficulty setting in later levels.

You can expect a Let’s Play video focused on each level starting today with the Dam. The videos will not feature any commentary so that you can enjoy the game as if you were playing it yourself.

Let’s Play GoldenEye on Xbox Series X Dam Level

Today, we are focused on the Dam level. This is the first level in the game and remains iconic. It draws inspiration from the beginning of the film where James Bond infiltrates a Soviet-era chemical weapons laboratory in Arkhangelsk, Russia where you meet up with 006, Alec Trevelyan.

Playing on 00 Agent, the mission objectives are:

  • Neutralize all alarms
  • Install covert modem
  • Intercept data backup
  • Bungee jump from platform

In the Xbox version of the game, you can unlock the achievement Run for 20 Gamerscore. All you have to do is complete the Damlevel on any difficulty setting.

Tips for the Dam Level

Ideally, you will use the silencer or the sniper rifle for this mission. The sniper is located at the top of the first tower. It is better to take out the guards quietly, although on easier difficulty settings you should be able to beat it guns blazing without losing all of your health.

In terms of the alarms, you just shoot them to “neutralize” them. There is an alarm located right before the chainlink fence after the pillbox and guard checkpoint. On the rear of this building behind some crates, there is a computer terminal where you will install the covert modem. Note that you need to go into the menu to equip it.

In order to intercept the data backup, you will need to go underneath the three guard towers on the dam. Each of them has a staircase that leads to a lower-level tunnel that runs the length of the dam. This area has lots of guards stationed around nooks and crannies, so be prepared for them as you make your way through the tunnel.

Once you reach the end of the tunnel, there is a server room with a few guards. Be extra careful not to destroy the servers as you will need them in order to intercept the data backup. If you accidentally destroy the server on 00 Agent, you will need to restart the level.
