Second Round Game of the Year Tournament Voting Begins

Second Round voting in the Game of the Year Tournament has begun. The First Round ended with a whimper when #2 New Super Mario Bros. was the unanimous choice of voters over #15 Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam. The Game of the Year Tournament 2006 ended in a fashion uncharacteristic of the rest of the First Round matches. Several top seeded games got upset, but a common result in most cases was a decisive win one way or the other. The only top seeded games with wins of over 80% of the vote were #1 Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, #1 Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, #2 Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, #4 Battlefield 2142, and #5 Final Fantasy III.

An example of a lopsided upset victory is the match between #4 Bully for the PlayStation 2 and #13 Final Fantasy V, where the Game Boy Advance game upset the higher seed with 66.1% to 33.9%. Several other upsets took place, including #12 Prey’s victory over #5 Tetris DS 51.1% to 48.9%; #14 LEGO Star Wars II over #3 Kingdom Hearts II 60% to 40%; #11 Tomb Raider Legend over #6 Fight Night Round 3 66.7% to 33.3%; and #14 Yoshi’s Island DS over #3 Rainbow Six Vegas.
