Super Smash Bros. just turned 20 years old

As of this week, Super Smash Bros. is now a 20-year-old franchise. The N64 classic launched in North America on April 26, 1999.

It’s hard to believe, but the original Super Smash Bros. was not a massively-hyped game. It wasn’t even close to the top-rated game on the Nintendo 64. In fact, it didn’t even crack the top 100 highest-rated games in 1999.

Its legacy, though, is undeniable. It has spawned sequels on each successive Nintendo console since the N64 and sold well over 30 million units across the entire franchise. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold over 12 million copies on the Switch alone.
