Mojang and Telltale Games Bringing Story Mode to Minecraft

Mojang announced that it is bringing an episodic, plot-driven Story Mode – developed by Telltale Games – to its massively successful Minecraft. Minecraft: Story Mode will begin rolling out in 2015, according to the publisher.

The episodes will be based in the Minecraft universe, introducing “new characters and familiar themes.” Developer Telltale Games is thrilled about the opportunity to use Minecraft as the foundation of the project, according to President and Co-Founder Kevin Bruner:

Partnering with Mojang is a dream come true for us as game makers and as storytellers. Minecraft is a world of infinite possibility and imagination. Working with the Mojang team on our own unique, story-driven interpretation of their fascinating universe is a tremendous honor. We simply cannot wait for fans across the world to take off with us on this new adventure.

Mojang’s Owen Hill echoes the enthusiasm about Telltale’s involvement with Story Mode:

People really like the idea of stories about Minecraft, but forcing a narrative into our core game experience would restrict players’ freedom to view the world in their own unique ways. Instead, letting them explore an alternate interpretation via Minecraft: Story Mode, driven by the proven might of Telltale, seems like a no-brainer. We’re big fans of Telltale Games at Mojang, and we can’t wait to reveal more details on Story Mode soon.

Minecraft: Story Mode will be available on PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and both Xbox and PlayStation consoles in 2015.

Stay tuned for specific release date information when it is announced.
