Is Sony (or anyone) developing new PSVR games for PS5?

Sony confirms that there are not currently any announced PS5 games with support for PlayStation VR.

One of the perks of the PS5 is that the system has a smoother transition from current-gen to next-gen than the transition from PS3 to PS4. The PS4 does not support PS3 game backward compatibility.

The PlayStation 5, however, does support PS4 games. It also supports PS4 devices like the DualShock 4 and PSVR for PS4 games. (Sony says that DualShock 4 cannot be used to play PS5 games.) But at least in the immediate future, the PS5 apparently will not have new PlayStation VR games.

The news comes via a report from Upload VR:

If you buy the PS5 versions of Hitman 3 or No Man’s Sky in the coming months, you won’t have access to either game’s PSVR support found in their PS4 versions, as the company has not announced PSVR games on PS5.

On the subject of Hitman 3, a Sony spokesperson told UploadVR via email that you’ll need the PS4 version of Hitman 3 to play it in VR since the PSVR operates as a backward compatible device. The representative then went on to clarify, “We have not announced PS5 titles for PS VR.”

You can, of course, still play backward compatible PS4 PSVR games on the PlayStation 5. So it’s not like Sony is completely abandoning PSVR. But if you were hoping to play the PS5 version of games like Hitman 3 in VR, it looks like you’re out of luck.

My Take

Part of the appeal of the PS5 is that it has backward compatibility with PS4 games and PSVR. Sony should have been more forthcoming if they do not have plans to makes PSVR games specifically for PS5. It would have been useful information to have before pre-orders opened.

What do you think of the news that PS5 will not have any games specifically for PSVR right out of the gate? Share your thoughts in the comments!

  1. The pessimistic side of me thinks that Sony did not want to release such disappointing news about PSVR support, just in case it did have a negative affect on a customers choice to buy a PS5. I am now glad that I cancelled my pre-order through fears the COVID problem may have caused issue with supply and shipping. I will be sticking with my PS4 Pro for now.
