Nintendo Believed to Announce Wii Successor Soon

It has been nearly five years since the Wii launched in November 2006. Once the dominant console of this generation, and still the top selling one, the Wii has been in a sales slump in recent months. A drought of releases throughout the spring has led many to ponder whether a successor will be announced soon.

Video game magazine Game Informer confirms those suspicions. “We have confirmed with multiple sources that this new home system is capable of running games at HD resolutions. There are conflicting reports, however, as to whether its graphics will be comparable to those on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – meaning it could surpass or fall short of those systems,” they write.

Nintendo, whose somewhat frosty relationship with third parties has softened in recent years, has reportedly begun to show publishers the system in order to get a launch lineup ready for late 2012. With a Wii price drop imminent, it appears to be the perfect time for Nintendo to confirm a HD upgrade for their home console.
