PS3 Reaches 50M in Sales, Move Tops 8M

Sony announced on Friday that the company’s PlayStation 3 console has sold 50 million units as of March 29, 2011. That puts it in third place behind Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360, but it is quickly catching up. It was only in January that Microsoft announced the company had surpassed 50 million in Xbox 360 sales. The Xbox 360 launched a year before the PS3.

While that news is certainly heartening for the Japanese electronics giant, the PlayStation Move’s sales are more disappointing. The wireless motion controller has sold 8 million units as of April 3, putting it firmly behind Kinect for Xbox 360, which has sold over 10 million units as of early March despite a $50 price differential between the Kinect and the PlayStation Move bundle. Nonetheless, the adoption rate for both peripherals is quite strong from a historical standpoint.
