Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion announced as major updates end on PS4 and Xbox One

Cyberpunk patch 1.6

CD Projekt Red made an announcement today that marks the end of the road for new content on last-gen consoles and allows the team to focus on the future.

It’s no secret that the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 has been one of the biggest disappointments since the release of No Man’s Sky. A game more than 5 years in development that looked to be the coup on the table from CD Projekt Red, it turned out to be just another run-of-the-mill game. Therefore, CD Projekt Red has focused on improving the title in every aspect.

Following this philosophy, CD Projekt Red revealed during Night City Wire that a lot of changes and content are coming to Cyberpunk 2077. Expect everything from technical changes for a better gameplay experience to a new expansion. In addition, they announced the release of a new patch that has given us a lot to talk about.

New patch marks the end of support for PS4 and Xbox One

Since the last major update of the game in February, the arrival of new content to the game was expected as well as new bug fixes to improve the gaming experience. This last update not only brought some performance improvements to the new generation of consoles. This patch presented a lot of changes in all aspects for both PS4 and Xbox One. It’s something that owners of these consoles appreciated considerably.

Cyberpunk patch 1.6

During the Night City Wire broadcast, CD Projekt Red announced patch 1.6. The patch features the usual improvements and bug fixes, but it also brings new bonus content inspired by Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the new CD Projekt Red exclusive Netflix series that we’ve already talked about here on Game Freaks 365. Back in the day, it was confirmed that the game would receive content from the animated series.

Even so, the important thing about this update is not the arrival of this extra content. Although Cyberpunk 2077 has been announced from the beginning for PS4 and Xbox One, the focus and effort of the studio has switched to next-gen consoles. Therefore, CD Projekt Red has announced that this is the last major update on PS4 and Xbox One.

A decision that was anticipated after the last patches

While this is an unfortunate decision for those console players who waited patiently for the game’s release, it was still expected. Clearly, the game needs the graphics and processing power of the new generations. If we compare playing Cyberpunk 2077 on both generations, it’s like comparing a Toyota Prius to a Toyota Supra.

Maybe the last generation does the job but not at all compared to the next-gen consoles. Therefore, CD Projekt Red has decided to focus on the PS5 and Xbox X Series X|S in order to deliver the best possible performance in the game. However, not everything is finished. Both PS4 and Xbox One will receive minor updates and bug fixes. But, still, it won’t be for long. Just don’t expect major new content.

Phantom Liberty

Despite this unfortunate decision, not all of the Night City Wire was full of bad news. After the confirmation of the new free DLC in January 2021, we haven’t heard anything about the new expansion of the game. Almost 20 months later, CD Projekt Red has finally confirmed the arrival of this new expansion.

Cyberpunk patch 1.6

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is the new expansion. It will introduce a new area in Night City and a cast of new characters that will make the adventure something incredible. Phantom Liberty also marks the return of Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, although no further details were revealed.

What has been confirmed, however, is that this new expansion will arrive in 2023. In the same way, it has been announced that this expansion will arrive exclusively for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Google Stadia. It will mark the definitive end of Cyberpunk 2077 in the last generation consoles.

We would like to know your opinion, do you think CD Projekt Red has ended PS4 and Xbox One support too quickly? Will all this effort of the studio to improve the game give good results or it will be again a big disappointment? Share your opinion with us on the forums!
