Report: Nintendo to launch new Switch model in 2020

The Taiwan-based electronics newspaper DigiTimes is reporting that Nintendo will release a new Switch model in mid-2020.

According to DigiTimes, production will begin “at the end of first-quarter 2020.” The Taiwanese newspaper cites sources “from the related upstream supply chain.”

This isn’t the first hint at a new Nintendo Switch. Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki reported in August 2019 that “Nintendo has ideas for further updates to the Switch lineup after those two models to make the platform’s lifecycle long.”

The two models mentioned in the WSJ report are from 2019. Nintendo released an updated Switch model with improved battery life and an entirely new model in the form of the smaller and more affordable Nintendo Switch Lite.

The Switch and Switch Lite did well during the crucial holiday season, selling nearly 1 million units during the week of Thanksgiving in the US alone. But with PS5 and Xbox Series X on the horizon for holiday 2020, it makes sense for Nintendo to release a more powerful Switch model.
